The Blue Card: Week 3 Recap

The Blue Card: Week 3 Recap

The march to the Waddy Cup began in Week 3. Teams competed on a well-manicured pitch that did not diminish the TIDE skill on display. The only difference being, teams think they had an excuse.

For those who don’t know, the Waddy Cup is named after the late Don Waddy. Don was a big part of the Cowichan and TIDE Soccer community. While I knew of Don for many years playing in Cowichan, I didn’t really get to know him until I made the transition to the referee’s union. When Don saw me modelling the referee jersey, he was quick to share his referee knowledge and was always available to assist on a line when needed.

TIDE Rules of the game

If a team is short to start a game this year, the team remains short or forfeits. Following the forfeit, a team can add super subs. While Antony is disappointed that he cannot play 8 games each night, this will encourage teams to clear their Monday night schedules for TIDE. The referee union has been asked to track absentees. Collective bargaining has begun to address the added responsibility.

The Blue Card Award

Honourable mentions:

Team Fire Fox’s Callum Branch for advising all he has a girlfriend in Waddy Cup action.

Referee Union member and second-best Adam (Adam Paulson) designing and delivering referee paperwork on short notice.

Team Kelly Green’s Lucas Daniels with a valiant bicycle kick attempt.

This week’s recipient…

Team Lime – Amelia “Warrior” Calverley. Stepped on, unfortunate collisions, relentless defending, Amelia picked herself up off the turf at least 5 times and didn’t miss a beat. I was so inspired, I almost came out of retirement. The union refused my request.
