Word from the Commish: Final Stretch!

The Waddy Cup Final, Poppy Cup, and Summer League are all just around the corner! There are only two weeks remaining in the 2026 Spring League season, but lots to look forward to. The Waddy Cup Final has been set, with Jordan Clarke’s Black slated to face Ellie Irvine’s Purple for the third time this season. Black secured a victory in their first meeting – a 3-2 comeback win in penalty kicks in Week 12. Word From the Commish: Mid-season update!

April showers bring May flowers – if showers mean blue cards and flowers mean goals and fun! Just like that, we’re into the second half of the Spring League season. June is just around the corner, the weather is getting warmer, and everyone is getting into the Spring League groove. We’ve gone several weeks without a blue card, so either the referees are getting lenient or everyone’s starting to get on board – long may the latter continue! We’re getting into the tournament and vacation season as we creep closer to summer, so it’ll be fun to see how things develop into July! The Waddy Cup is entering its third

The Blue Card: Week 7 Recap

Week 7 was a great one to be a referee. Two very close, well played and perfectly refereed games! TIDE LAWS OF THE GAME What happens when a player not on the field interferes or touches the ball before the ball exists the field of play?  It used to be an automatic yellow/blue card. Now it is an indirect free kick to the opposing team unless it is deliberate interference that impacts the play of the game. A blue card could be shown.  The Blue Card Award Honorable Mentions This week’s winner The Whole Match – Team Royal Blue and Team Orange. This one had a razor thin margin and

The Blue Card: Week 5/6 Recap (+Billfest!)

With warm weather and many TIDE players participating in Billfest, Week 6 was a bit sluggish. Some short benches aside, in true TIDE fashion, skill was on display. TIDE LAWS OF THE GAME Drop Ball. A drop ball occurs following the stoppage of play for any reason that is not part of the Laws of the game. While anything is possible in a sanctioned TIDE match, a defective ball, an injury or an animal that does not wear a tide jersey runs on to the field are a few Drop ball scenarios. The ball is dropped to the team that had possession before play was whistled down unless….. The drop

Week 6 Recap

WEEK 6 RECAP  |  TIDE SPRING LEAGUE  |  MAY 4, 2026 Provner Was Here. Navy’s In The Middle. The Commish Is Being Hunted. BY JORDAN CLARKE Archambault, the powerful soccer magnate and architect of the Lime roster, feels bamboozled by the league insiders he paid thousands of dollars to help him with the draft. He looks forward to taking on Forest Green in a battle of greens. Six weeks in, and what’s unfolding is a gripping race up top and a full-blown scrap in the middle. The Crown (Forest Green, six for six) sits alone. The Chasing Three (Purple, White, Royal Blue, all on fifteen) are within three points. The

Week 5 Recap – Week 6 Preview

WEEK 5 RECAP  |  TIDE SPRING LEAGUE  |  APRIL 27, 2026 Paps Hung Up The Gloves. Then Bet The Civic. BY JORDAN CLARKE Forty games. 177 goals. Forest Green still perfect. Five teams stacked at the top of the chase. And the most chaotic transfer of the spring — the kind that doesn’t show up in any roster — happened on Royal Blue’s bench, where the keeper turned in his gloves and walked into a betting window with the title of his car in his hand. Paps retired. Or, more accurately, Paps retired-from-keeping-but-not-from-the-narrative. Hisham Mohamed took the gloves and the starting line for Royal Blue’s 4-1 dismantling of Kelly Green.

The Blue Card: Week 4 Recap

TIDE teams are really settling in. Organized chaos is now less organized chaos. Hints of strategy, formations, set plays and an increase in player interpretation of the TIDE Laws of the Game are evident. TIDE LAWS OF THE GAME Handballs. FIFA (in particular IFAB – interprets FIFA laws) laws have evolved year over year. When a ball touches hand, arm, shoulder, neck, anything close to an arm appendage and any play in the penalty area, referees are accustomed to the perfect pitch chorus of “Handball” that soon follows. I personally called far fewer handball infractions this year than I did last year because of the IFAB interpretation. If a hand/arm

Week 4: Kelly Green Floored a Giant, Purple Came Home, and Teal Got Off Zero

WEEK 4 RECAP  |  TIDE SPRING LEAGUE  |  APRIL 20, 2026 Kelly Green Floored a Giant. Purple Came Home. Teal Got Off Zero. BY JORDAN CLARKE Mattie Smith trying to stop young gun Rowan Thompson… getting a little “handsy” here. Four weeks in. Thirty-two games played. 141 goals on the season. One team still perfect — and for the first time this spring, the table has a shape to it. A top six separated by a single goal difference. A middle pack bruised but breathing. A bottom rung that finally, finally, put a crack in the floor. Week 4 delivered three results that will echo for months. Navy — the

Week 3: Pink Pulled The Trigger, The Wall Cracked, and Two Contenders Fell on the Same Night

WEEK 3 RECAP  •  TIDE SPRING LEAGUE  •  APRIL 13, 2026  By Jordan Clarke Pink Pulled The Trigger. The Wall Cracked. The unbeaten club lost a member. The fortress finally bled. And a team built on heart just authored the upset of the season. 16 TEAMS  •  3 WEEKS  •  108 GOALS  •  2 UNBEATEN Three weeks in. Twenty-four games. A hundred and eight goals. Two teams still standing. Week 2 had four unbeatens and a power structure that looked permanent. Week 3 took a wrecking ball to it. Purple fell. Royal Blue fell. The team everyone wrote off as “heart over blueprint” just authored the upset of the season. And

Word From the Commish: The Second Annual Waddy Cup is Underway!

The lines were straighter, the sky was darker, but the grass was just as long. The Waddy Cup campaign kicked off this week. This is the second year running that we have had an in-season tournament on the grass beside the turf. It helps make the most of the space we have and gives everyone an extra 1 – 6 games per Spring League season. However, prior to the 6:30 ‘Christmas Derby’ kick-off between Red and Green, the grass was debuted by the TIDE Spring League waitlist drop-in. In an attempt to cram even more soccer into an already busy Monday night at Sherman turf, current members of the Spring

The Blue Card: Week 3 Recap

The march to the Waddy Cup began in Week 3. Teams competed on a well-manicured pitch that did not diminish the TIDE skill on display. The only difference being, teams think they had an excuse. For those who don’t know, the Waddy Cup is named after the late Don Waddy. Don was a big part of the Cowichan and TIDE Soccer community. While I knew of Don for many years playing in Cowichan, I didn’t really get to know him until I made the transition to the referee’s union. When Don saw me modelling the referee jersey, he was quick to share his referee knowledge and was always available to

Week 2: Grey Robbed the Bank, Navy Robbed the Clock, and Four Teams Are Playing a Different Sport

WEEK 2 RECAP  •  TIDE SPRING LEAGUE  •  APRIL 9, 2026  By Jordan Clarke Four Unbeaten. One Ambush. Zero Answers. The favourites are set. The pretenders are exposed. And the Spring League just declared war on Week 1. 16 TEAMS  •  2 WEEKS  •  74 GOALS  •  4 UNBEATEN Two weeks in. Sixteen games. Seventy-four goals. Four teams playing a different sport. Week 1 was the warmup. Week 2 was a statement — or, in one case, a retraction. A hat-trick hero came out of nowhere. A keeper is running a sportsbook and outperforming his own lines. The gap between the top four and the rest of the league just got

The Blue Card: Week 2 Recap

The tide has started to shift to spring energy in week 2. League figurehead and founding member, Mr. Rowlings was caught on a hot mic imploring team Silver to try and limit initial control of the ball to 3 touches. The executive committee has added a new rule to the TIDE LAWS OF THE GAME. Goalies are being asked to announce their presence when leaving their crease and charging toward a ball. Acceptable shouts include but not limited to “Keeper”, “I’m on my way” or “Decent Goalie”. The executive team is committed to promoting safe play and we as referees appreciate this adjustment. We will not blow a whistle on

A Bookie, A Blue Card Epidemic, and Two Games That Might End Friendships: Week 2 is upon us – See our predictions.

Week 2 Preview | Monday, April 6 By League Reporter One week. That’s all it took for the TIDE Spring League to announce itself. Eight matches, 41 goals, and a sin bin that’s already doing overtime. If Week 1 was the appetizer, Monday night is where we find out who’s actually here to eat. The Bookie Has Entered the Chat Before we get into the football — yes, the league now has a bookie. Owen “Paps” Papineau has apparently taken it upon himself to set lines and take action on Spring League matches. The man is running a full operation out here. And in a move that is either deeply honorable

Word From the Commish: Start of 11th Season of TIDE Spring League

Monday, March 30th, 2026, marks the start of the 11th annual Spring League season, and the first where teams have been determined by a draft. Eight days ago, 16 captains and their assistants gathered in the clubhouse to select the players to play alongside every Monday night for the Spring. Some came adorned with collared shirts and ties, most came with notes and laptops, but all came as members of the Cowichan Valley soccer community.  Cowichan Valley’s soccer community was well represented within the leadership group. The over 35 Men’s Steelheads were most represented – making for over 20% of the leadership pool. This features Curtis Flynn and Justin Parish of

The Blue Card: Week 1 Recap

It was nice to see everyone back on the pitch for another highly anticipated spring league. On a weekly basis I’ll share some referee insights for both spring league and FIFA rules so that you can completely understand a referee’s perspective and never question a call again. I’ll touch on what I’m seeing on the field and hand out what I’m sure will become a weekly must read, the Blue Card Award of the week. Spring League Rule – no deliberate going to ground. Tackling is obvious. Sliding or placing a hand or knee on the ground to block a shot is prohibited and will at minimum result in an
